The time taken to produce the memorial varies, with complexity. However this stage will never delay installation of the memorial. Neil can provide a specific time estimate and subsequent status reports, as required.
While this is dependent on the overall memorial design, the traditional headstone fixing method may be used. This means that the stone can usual be fixed into the ground, without the need for visible surface supports. However, in some cases the ground structure various from location to location and may require the use of a surface plinth. Neil will advise.
Costs: The final payment is due when the memorial has been completed and installed.
Neil is the in-house stonemason for Highgate Cemetery, producing some of the finer monuments the cemetery has ever seen. Apart from being one of London’s greatest treasures, Highgate Cemetery is a haven of beauty and tranquillity, far away from the hustle and bustle of London life.
It is a place of peace and contemplation. Who could not be moved by the setting itself? There is a romantic confusion of plants, trees, memorials and wildlife. The ubiquitous ivy, wild flowers and native grasses provide not only a beautiful setting, but also a sanctuary for nature – butterflies, bird life, insects and small mammals, such as foxes and hedgehogs, flourish in the heart of London.
This has been achieved, over many years, through sensitive restoration, managed planting of native trees and a meticulous love and care about the entire environment.
Most importantly Highgate remains a working cemetery today. As new memorials are installed, guidance is provided to help ensure that sensitivity to the Highgate environment continues.
Neil began as a stone carver by following in his father’s footsteps after leaving school. He served an apprenticeship for over 7 years. After this period Neil became self-employed in monumental and architectural carving. During this period Neil worked on commissions such as;
Ely Cathedral (lettering of interior wall plaques);
Central Criminal Court (Portland stone, hand carved and gilded letters);
Hill Samuel Bank (supplying, lettering and carving external slate facia);
Harrods (lettering of plaque to commemorate opening of new Food Hall);
In 1990 Neil established his own monumental masonry business located in Burnham-on-Crouch, supplying stones and lettering on a direct basis as well as offering a specialist service for design and carving to other local masons.
Since 1997 Neil has been working at Highgate Cemetery creating memorials on site and also private commissions at his studio in Sudbury,Suffolk.
